Monthly pay guide
How to check minimum wage when paid monthly
Monthly pay can make underpayment harder to spot because hours, deductions, and accommodation charges are spread across a longer pay reference period.
Start with monthly hours
If you are paid monthly, use the total hours worked in that monthly pay period rather than a weekly average unless the average exactly matches the period being checked.
Include regular shifts, additional hours, required training time, and other hours that should count for the minimum wage calculation.
Monthly checks that often matter
- Whether the age band changed during or after the period
- Required uniform or tool costs paid that month
- Accommodation days and any charge for the month
- Whether the payslip includes pay for all hours worked
Run a monthly calculation
Switch the calculator to monthly hours, then enter the hourly rate and costs for the same period. The take-home estimate will annualise the monthly result for PAYE and National Insurance.
